About this book
Early twentieth century, opportunities weren't nearly as opened to women, especially young girls finishing eighth grade in country spaces. Eva Titus found herself in this situation, as well as being in love. Her parents thought her young man was not right for her. Being headstrong, she eloped with her man, in the middle of the night. She left her younger sister, Christina, pondering how anyone could leave their loving family and the farm.
Much changed in five years. A high school is built in the small community, so Christina takes that option. The Titus family weathered the storm of gossip of Eva and Dave leaving town. A war started across the sea. Dave, filled with angst and worry about finances, offers his services to the Army. Eva receives a telegram that Dave died in France. She and her almost five-year-old girl return to the farm. She offers herself as a hired girl until she can get back on her feet. Instead, her father welcomes her with open arms. She can't shake the idea she has to work to return to good graces. She doesn't want to remain on the farm with the faith of her family, though.
Hugh Morgan visits the community when his father marries an old maid, settling in her home. The young ladies are impressed with Hugh's good looks. His eye, though, lands on the hard-working Eva and is willing to take on a dead man's daughter. Eva loves the city and wants to return, so she agrees to marry Hugh. Did she make a mistake?
